Chapter 2 – Perpetual Emotions
“So, how’s life?” I asked with concern.
“Just like that, a normal life. You should probably answer that one. How’s life, ajay? You were gone without a word and now after eight years, you come back? What happened, hero?”
The last time I spoke to her was before eight years, as a normal lower middle class guy, 17 years of age, a childhood friend, a secret lover and an orphan.
***Before Eight years****
Place: Wazirabad, A village in the north of New Delhi
Located on the banks of yamuna and in the Civil Lines Subdivision of the North Delhi district, Wazirabad was the home to Delhi police training academy and many civilians. Apart for the beautiful Yamuna river, the tomb of Shah Alam at the south end of the village and Yamuna biodiversity park on the edge of Jagatpur village were the popular places in the village. The scarcity of water was unheard of at wazirabad and people in this village had a natural liking towards police career.
I stood in front of my dad’s grave with a low face and prayed, while a drop of tears escaped from my closed eyes.
It’s been a year since my father passed away and the one year path as an orphan had been tough. More tough than I had imagined.
Having never seen my mom in my life, I did miss my dad but more so that I’ll be leaving him for so long. I cleared the SAT entrance examination and had to leave for BITS pilani, Rajasthan which was around 200 kms far away from here. My uncle helped me join the hostel but I had to work part time to pay my bills there.
There was hardly 30 minutes with me to leave for the taxi and I ran to search for riya in her home.
We’ve been family friends for many years and riya was the only good part of my life ever since my dad died. Though society can’t help in anyway, they can very well show sympathy. Fake people and fake emotions all around except for riya, who was real. She was just the opposite. Not to forget the crazy boy I was in my childhood, to propose riya in my six years of age. Riya was so beautiful even a six year old kid fell for her though she was of same age then.
Back then, we even spoke about our family and our two children she will give birth to when we grew up. Madly in love, ever since that day I’ve always seen her as my wife. I know that’s funny but fortunately I was ignorant enough to have been living that way.
Though it’s been nine years since we spoke about it, as we grew up, I found more difficulty in talking with her the way I used to do before. However, riya didn’t change being a chatter box who kept talking something or the other and I always listened. When she spoke, everything of her spoke. Her eyes, her hands, her fingers, her eyebrows, her lips, her everything. When she spoke, everything of mine listened. My eyes, my hair, my hands, my lips, my everything. We spent our most of the times together and the more I stayed with her, the more I fell for her.
“Ajay dog! So this is where you’ve been?” the familiar voice shouted from behind.
” Riya!” I sighed. “I’ve been searching for you idiot.. ”
“Why so? I don’t have anything to eat anyways” she laughed.
Why would she laugh at a time like this?
“I never want to miss that stupid laughter in my life riya. I’ve told this once and I repeat, I love you riya. Very much” I told her looking into her eyes.
She stood there speechless looking inside my eyes trying to find a prank in them but it was the truth and I won’t hide it anymore.
“Stop kidding idiot. Is it a joke?” She tried to smile but I remained sober.
“Are you serious, ajay?. My parents! They will never agree to it. You know they want a guy who earns well and the one who is from our caste” she said.
“I don’t care about your parents but you. You say you love me and I’ll earn all the money your parents want and take you with me. Please riya.” My voice broke when I pleaded.
“I don’t know Ajay. I’ve always loved you and will always love you… But the love which you mean, I don’t know. Stay safe and take care of your health, Ajay. Let’s see what god has planned for us. I’ll be waiting for you” she lowered her face.
” I swear I’ll come back and take you with me. Love you forever riya”
I hugged her and left.
The feeling of leaving the village where I spent all of my childhood was different. It was neither emotional and painful nor a happy one. Indeed, my thoughts varied from my superhero dad and my riya to the favorite spots in the village.
The usual old roads, the usual old buildings and usual old people, everything was the same but I had a different feeling this time. This might be the last time I see these roads and buildings.
All I had in my mind was to work hard and earn well. Everything for riya. My everything!.
